Engineering student Dies after bathing in Isha Yoga Pond

A 21-year-old engineering student is believed to have drowned in a pond on the premises of the Isha Yoga Centre near here on Friday. The deceased, identified as M Ramesh (21) from Tiruvannamalai, was taking bath with 30 others in Suryakund when the incident occurred.

A third-year civil engineering student in a private college in Vellore, Ramesh had come to the centre with his fellow students to take a dip in Suryakund pond — a new Theerathakund for men.

After coming out of the pond, other members in the group found Ramesh missing. They later found him in the pool.

Though they rushed him to a private hospital here, the doctors declared him brought dead. The body was shifted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem.

The public relations officer (PRO) of Isha Yoga Centre said a notice pasted near the pool had strictly barred people suffering from fever, cold, fits and asthma from taking bath in the pond.

“The students who came along with Ramesh had claimed that he might have had an asthmatic attack while taking bath in the pond, which led to his death,” said the PRO. He added that Ramesh was given first-aid, before he was taken to the hospital.

“Ramesh used to work in farm and attend school. He was absolutely healthy,” said Ramesh’s relative J Udhayakumar.

Udhayakumar also claimed that he had given the money for the tour that was organised by the college. However, the college authorities denied that it was a college trip. The Alanthurai Police registered a case and are investigating the reason for the death.
